For the first time, a canine king and queen will be crowned at the Lake Superior Ice Festival this year.

“We have everything from little tiny chihuahuas up to a mastiff,” said Cheri Fitch, the Fundraising and Events Coordinator for the Humane Society of Douglas County.

The contest is a fundraiser for the Humane Society – pet owners paid $5 per entry and each vote costs $1. Voting is being conducted at https://e.givesmart.com/events/jPA/.

“Our community is voting to see who wins the crowns,” Fitch said, “and we do literally have crowns for dogs!”

The winners will be crowned on Saturday at Noon on the band shell stage on Barker’s Island.

Ice Festival events kick off Friday, with most events on or near Barker’s Island. More information is available at lakesuperioricefestival.com.

WDIO News at Five and Six will broadcast live from Barker’s Island on Friday.
