The 11th annual Paws for Love fundraiser for the Humane Society of Douglas County was held April 22 at the UW-Superior Yellowjacket Union. There was an overwhelming response to the RSVPs, and the event was at capacity seating.

HSDC’s most popular fundraiser raised almost $35,000 to provide food, shelter and medical care for stray, abandoned and neglected animals housed at the Superior Animal Shelter.

We are truly grateful for the monetary support of our major sponsors: Barcodes Plus, Calumet Superior, Culver’s Restaurant, Dan’s Feed Bin, Dreamland Supper Club, Four Star Construction, Graymont, Hammond, Images by Carolyn Jones, Interstate All Battery Center, Mecum Auctions, National Bank of Commerce, Northland AFC, Solid Foundations of Minnesota, Superior Animal Hospital & Boarding Suites, Tavern League of Wisconsin, United Piping, Inc. and Worldwide Machining & Welding, Superior Hydraulics Repair. Your generous spirit of giving back to our city is key to this event.

A few of the success stories with shelter animals were featured in Marcy Barby’s PowerPoint presentation. These touching and heartwarming stories highlight some of the best “happy endings” over the past year.

An array of delicious desserts for the dessert auction were graciously contributed by Sara’s Table, Amazing Grace, Johnson Bakery, Duluth Grill, Whole Foods Coop, Super One Bakery, A Dozen Excuses Donuts & More, The Exchange, Cub Foods, Valentini’s, Cathy’s Cakes, Lake Superior Bakehouse and Poplar Golf Course. Additionally, silent and live auction packages, services and goods valued at almost $18,000 were generously donated by businesses and individuals and gave people a wide variety of items to bid on. Special thanks and two paws up to Superior Police Chief Nicholas Alexander for arranging the priceless live auction item of a “meet and greet,” a four-hour ride-along with Officer Nicholas Eastman and K-9 Marik.

Sincere thanks to Gene Demko for another fabulous shelter video shown during the evening, ever-popular auctioneer, Lou Campbell, and pianist Ben Hanson. And special thanks goes to Barcodes Plus for mailings and Images by Carolyn Jones, shelter animal photographer. Kudos, too, to the staff at UWS for accommodating our needs and helping to organize, set up, assist and clean up at this amazing fundraiser.

Lastly, our guests deserve a round of applause … your attendance is evidence of your generosity and compassion for animals in our great community and your continued support is much appreciated.
